No Children.
This song (mp3 link) is amazing. It is so broken and spot on. It will not get out of my head. The Mountain Goats - No Children.

I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come up with a failsafe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town
Again in my life
I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
Yeah I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

Disaster is amazing, and it is beautiful and you want to be a part of it. It's like that with love, too. It doesn't have to be perfect, or last forever, and it's better if it doesn't. When it stops being exciting because it's so good, it should get horrible. It should fall apart and the ground should shake and the seas should thrash and god should shake his head and all your friends should ask you "why are you still with that person?" so you can say "because it's exciting again."

Disaster is amazing. I don't know. This song just captures that feeling so well. Like that feeling you get when your body is broken, when you fall hard off your skateboard, or get punched in the face. The music is so cheery and country and uplifting, and it makes me glad to be in love. I don't think a person should ever be afraid that something won't last forever.

It's one of those songs where it just gets me right away. The only other time I've been grabbed so immediately was Sould Coughing's first album, Ruby Vroom. It just got me.

That whole album is amazing and everyone should own it. Please get the whole thing if you have the means to. That song, though, is definitely one of the best songs I ever heard. I think it was stuck in my head all last year.

I made pretty much this exact same post a month ago, after having heard this song for the first time on a day when I was feeling kind of down. And I completely agree with you about how, despite the lyrics, the song becomes strangely uplifting. It hits you right in the guts, and it's wonderful and human and cathartic.

So, um, three cheers for me reiterating exactly what you just said! The Mountain Goats are awesome!

I took to trying to convince someone as to why someone would stay in a bad relationship. I knew as soon as I started to say it that 'sometimes you love someone enough..' was a crock of shit. You captured what I failed to put into words.
Sometimes that trendriled, psychedelic sparkplug in your chest you feel with love turns rusted and abrasive; the passion is still there, its just using a new conduit.

Ahh I love the mountain goats. Impossible to find their cds though. But somehow I found them. I absolutely love the song Going to Georgia. The music is just so beautiful.

Glad to know that there are a lot of people that like them, than I thought.

I actually bought the new(est?) Mountain Goats CD, The Sunset Tree, after hearing the song This Year.

It, too, evokes an amazing feeling, albeit a different one. I am a fan.

The Mountain Goats are fantastic. I was planning on playing this exact tract (along with Cubs in Five) on my radio show as part of "The Happy Tape" mix because it's just so great.
But, if you want some FREE Mountain Goats, http://www.archive.org/audio The Internet Archive is your friend. And if you listen to his show from 3/10/02 in Iowa City, you can actually hear me "Wooooo!" just before he starts playing "The Sign." I will never stop being embarassed by that nor will I stop admitting to it. And yes, he covers "The Sign" by Ace of Base. Why? Because he's that awesome!

That's awesome! Thanks! Also, tract is the best typo ever, on account of the implication that it's power is to convince people.

I love how beautifully bitter his songs can be. Cubs in Five is still (and probably will always be) one of my favourite songs.

Lyrics - Cubs in Five

They're gonna find intelligent life up there on the moon
And the Canterbury Tales will shoot up to the top of the best-seller list
And stay there for 27 weeks

And the Chicago Cubs will beat every team in the league
And the Tampa Bay Bucks will make all the way to January
And I will love you again
I will love you
Like I used to
I will love you again
I will love you
Like I used to

The stars are going to spell out the answer's to tomorrow's crossword
And the Phillips Corporation will admit that they made an awful mistake
And Bill Gates will singlehandedly spearhead the Heaven 17 revival

And the Chicago Cubs will beat every team in the league
And the Tampa Bay Bucks will make it all the way to the top
And I will love you again
I will love you
Like I used to
I will love you again
I will love you
Like I used to

Even if it doesn't, there is no point in worrying.

Or being afraid.

This is my favorite Moutain Goats song so far:

The reception's gotten fuzzy
The delicate balance is shifted
Put on your gloves and your black pumps
Let's pretend the fog has lifted
Now you see me
Now you don't
Now you say you love me
Pretty soon you won't
If we get our three score and ten
We won't pass this way again
So kiss me with your mouth open
Turn the tires toward the street
and stay sweet
All the chickens come on home to roost
Plump bodies blotting out the sky
you know it breaks my heart in half, in half
When I see them trying to fly because you just can't do
Things your body wasn't meant to
Hike up your fishnets
I know you
If we live to see the other side of this
I will remember your kiss
So do it with your mouth open
And take your foot off of the brake
For Christ's sake

Perfect

I definitely typed out a whole post about Dialudid and then I found out someone posted the lyrics up there. V.V So now I will talk about Family Happiness instead.

Family Happiness is the prime example of The Mountain Goats being bitter and beautiful and raw and amazing.

That was less cool than the post I deleted. But hey!

Anyone I know who is literary is very into John Darnielle's lyrics for some reason. Personally I find it a little bland for the most part, but I love the song Tallahassee.
